When people think about getting veneers, one of the first questions that often comes to mind is whether the procedure will be painful. It’s a natural concern—after all, veneers usually require a small amount of enamel to be carefully removed so the new porcelain “shells” can sit perfectly on the teeth without looking bulky.
So, the big question is: do veneers hurt?
When fitting veneers, your dentist will usually remove only a tiny layer of enamel from the front surface of the tooth—often no more than 0.2 to 0.3 mm. This is an extremely minimal adjustment and does not come close to the tooth’s nerves, meaning the process should not be painful.
You may notice a slight sensation or mild discomfort while the dental bur is in use, but this typically fades as soon as the procedure is complete. In some cases, veneers can even be placed without removing any enamel at all—making the treatment completely comfortable from start to finish.
To ensure you remain completely comfortable during treatment, most dentists will administer a local anaesthetic to the area around the tooth being treated. This numbs the gums and tooth entirely, so you won’t feel any pain—just a little pressure while the procedure takes place.
The only brief sensation you may notice is a small sting from the injection itself, but this passes quickly. For patients who feel especially anxious, additional options such as nitrous oxide (often called “laughing gas”) can also be provided to help you feel more relaxed throughout the appointment.
It’s normal for teeth to feel slightly sensitive after a small amount of enamel has been removed, especially before the final veneers are fitted. However, this is only temporary. In most cases, your dentist will place a set of temporary veneers to protect your teeth during this short period, helping to minimise any sensitivity and keep your smile comfortable until your permanent veneers are ready.
During the veneer procedure, there is no interference with your gums or soft tissues, so you shouldn’t experience any pain or irritation in these areas. That said, just like with any dental treatment, maintaining excellent oral hygiene is essential. Proper brushing, flossing, and following your dentist’s aftercare advice will help protect your teeth and gums, reducing the risk of infection and keeping your new smile healthy for years to come.
