Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that grow at the back of your gums and come through in your late teens / early twenties. Most people have 4 wisdom teeth - one in each corner.
Wisdom teeth can cause issues due to the lack of remaining space in the mouth. They can emerge at an angle, or get stuck, causing pain and discomfort. These wisdom teeth are known as impacted.
Impacted wisdom teeth can be positioned horizontally, angled toward or away from the second molars or inwards or outwards. Misalignment of the wisdom teeth can damage or crowd nearby teeth, the jawbone, or nerves. Bacteria can get trapped around the edge of the wisdom teeth causing tooth decay, gum disease and other issues.
Edgbaston Smile are able to remove wisdom teeth in clinic. Our dentist, Dr Suraj Dhanda holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Minor Oral Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and has years of experience treating patients who need wisdom tooth extractions.
The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthetic and normally only takes a few minutes. However, for nervous patients, twilight sedation is available, administered by a Consultant Anaesthetist.
Your dentist will carefully rock the tooth back and forth to widen the tooth socket. In some cases, a small cut in the gum may be required, and the tooth may need to be cut into smaller pieces in order to be removed.
You may have some swelling and discomfort after the procedure. You may also experience some minor bruising but this should begin to subside after the first three days.
The price for tooth extraction depends on the complexity of the procedure performed. There will also be an additional fee if sedation is required. Wisdom tooth extraction is a complex procedure, costing around £245.
