What is a Dental Crown?

Frequently employed for damaged or fragile teeth, dental crowns are available in a range of materials and can be utilized to restore any tooth. A dental crown is an artificial cap designed to fit over a compromised tooth, providing a natural appearance and safeguarding the remaining tooth structure.

The most robust choices for crowns are porcelain and gold. They are crafted by combining a gold base with a porcelain veneer, resulting in a highly durable and well-suited solution, particularly for posterior teeth. At Edgbaston Smile, we only offer the highest quality porcelain crowns with the highest durability and aesthetic result.
Procedure

Dental Crown Procedure

After choosing your preferred material, your dentist will begin by preparing the outer surface of the remaining tooth and taking an impression. This impression will be sent to a dental lab where a skilled technician will craft a custom-made crown according to your specifications. The fitting process follows, during which a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the area and ensure a painless experience.

With proper care and maintenance, a crown can typically endure for a period ranging from 20 to 30 years. The longevity of the crown depends on factors such as the chosen material, the tooth's location, and the level of post-treatment care provided by the patient.
Reasons

Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

  • If the tooth has a large fracture then a dental crown can be used to protect the remainder of the tooth.
  • A crown is much stronger than a filling if a large amount of your tooth has been lost due to decay.
  • If a large portion of your tooth has been removed during a root canal treatment, then a dental crown can fix this.
  • If you grind your teeth, a dental crown can provide extra protection for worn or damaged teeth.
  • Crowns can also improve the overall aesthetic of your smile.
